What`s New

Fritzing 1.0.2 for Mac released - You can download here.

Copper Fill
The Copper Fill algorithm is now vector-based. This resolves several bugs, particularly with Ground Fills, notably the troublesome horizontal gaps in the copper fill. It delivers greater precision and predictability. It also paves the way for several Gerber enhancements and forthcoming PCB features. The previous rasterized copper fill algorithm remains accessible for comparison purposes.

Fab Upload
The fab upload has been refactored. It is now possible to transmit properties such as width and height alongside Gerber, IPC, and BOM. This adjustment concurrently streamlines the development cycle for incorporating new features or addressing bugs.

Data Structure Fixes
Fritzing's data management has undergone upgrades, rectifying numerous issues responsible for discrepancies between views, overlooked errors in Design Rule Checks, and the presence of invisible, uneditable 'ghost' connections in the netlist. To resolve these issues in existing sketches, a straightforward delete-and-undo action on the problematic elements will eliminate the bugs. These enhancements, impacting numerous example projects, should foster more dependable and comprehensible performance from Fritzing moving forward.

Installation and Setup

To install Fritzing on any modern Mac, download the official installer file either from the app’s official website or secure FileHorse servers, and move the DMG file to the applications folder. That will start the installation procedure, and a fully deployed app will appear in the application folder, ready to be used.

How to Use

Upon starting the app, users can pick which basic mode they wish to use - Protoboard View, Schematic View, and PCB View.

The basic workflow consists of creating a circuit on the breadboard view, switching to the schematic view to create a circuit diagram, and then switching to the PCB view to create a PCB layout.

The individual wires can be created instantly by clicking and dragging a part's connector, and editing a circuit is made easy with functions such as drag and drop, copy and paste, multiple selection, rotation, undo history, and others.

The app may look a bit overwhelming to new users, but extensive documentation is accessible in the “Learning” section of the app’s official website.

User Interface

The main dashboard supports customization of on-screen modules by the user according to their needs and preferences. The app’s user interface is divided into three main sections:
  • The Project View – Dashboard for creating and editing virtual electronic circuit boards.
  • The Palette Windows – The access point to the large library of pre-made parts, part inspector, and project navigator.
  • The Part Creator – A streamlined tool for creating and modifying electronic parts.
