WebKit for Mac

Many of your favorite web browsers, including Google Chrome and Safari, are powered by an open-source web browser engine called WebKit for Mac. Even several macOS applications use the engine, such as Dashboard and Mail.

The Development Continues

Since it is an open-source engine with a lot of popularity, there is a community devoted to developing the engine and making improvements to it. HTML coding and JavaScript are used in WebKit. The KJS and KDE KHTML libraries provided the coding originally. Now there are major companies developing the engine, including Nokia, Bitstream, Google, KDE, BlackBerry, Apple, and several independent open source developers.

The WebKit engine makes applications so much faster and easier to use. It is the best engine to have in your web browser when browsing through websites on the internet.

Several experimental browsers are utilizing the power of WebKit for macOS as well. All the default browsers of the main operating systems use the app. These operating systems include BlackBerry 10, Tizen, Android, and iOS. Even the Amazon Kindle Reader uses Web Kit.

Cross-Platform Availability

Applications that use the app are not just compatible with Mac OS X computers and devices. They are also compatible with Windows platforms as well.

It uses the C++ programming language for its interface. It features many sets of classes to allow all kinds of browsing features and to showcase internet content. This is a user-friendly interface that is similar to the Safari interface.

In other words, you can open the internet browser and get a preview of several different pages in multiple tabs. You can also create a Reading list and add pages to it, create bookmarks, and email an opened webpage to anyone you’d like.

An All-Inclusive Web Browser with a User-Friendly Interface

WebKit is very similar to Safari. They both let you export web pages into PDF format and use your Dashboard to open page clips. When you use the View menu at the top of the window, you can alter the text encoding, activate or deactivate Full-Screen mode, and choose whether to show your sidebar, status bar, or favorites bar.
